RESEARCH SUMMARY
Dr. Hutchison received an American Sleep Medicine Foundation career advancement award in 2006 for her study entitled, “Neural correlates of adaptation to sleep deprivation in obstructive sleep apnea - A Pilot Study”. This fMRI study looks at brain function before and after 24 hours of sleep deprivation in healthy controls and patients with obstructive sleep apnea.
Dr. Hutchison has recently collaborated with the Institute of Imaging Science (VUIIS) and the Department of Radiology to develop the technology of simultaneously acquiring fMRI and EEG data. This will allow sleep researchers to “see” what changes are occurring in the brain during different sleep stages. She won a Young Investigator’s Honorable Mention Award at the American Academy of Sleep Medicine’s for her abstract entitled “Cortical Activation Can Be Visualized During Sleep Using Simultaneous EEG-fMRI”.
