BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Dr. Yao earned his medical degree in 1977 and his M.S. in 1979 from Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Shanghai, China. Yao was a research fellow in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology for Zhong Shan Medical University in Guang Zhou, China and instructor, then assistant professor of Microbiology and Immunology for Shanghai University from 1981 - 1989.

Yao was a post-doctorate in the Department of Physiology at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN from 1990 – 1991, then came to Vanderbilt University as a research assistant in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. In 1996, Yao became a research assistant for the Department of Neurology, and in 2002 he became an instructor for the department, a position he continues to hold.
