Neurology
Residency at Vanderbilt> Vanderbilt’s Neurology residency program is dedicated to producing the future leaders in neurology research, education and practice – neurologists who are prepared to meet the challenges presented by the rapidly expanding body of knowledge in the neurosciences. The department offers both adult and child neurology programs, which are GME approved and are carefully designed to build the basic strengths necessary to become an outstanding clinical neurologist and, for those interested in research, to develop as a first-rate physician-scientist. To enrich the training experience, the program offers residents a full-time dedicated educational specialist, substantial elective time for academic/clinical development, a yearly posted basic science and clinical seminar series, regular informal faculty-resident conferences, and a weekly chairman’s rounds with Dr. Macdonald. Residents also benefit from a large teaching faculty and a conveniently clustered five-hospital system in which to train. Vanderbilt’s Neurology residency program aims to establish a foundation for lifelong learning in neurology and the neurosciences. To accomplish this mission, trainees are offered a flexible didactic program tailored to their individual needs, extensive practical training, as well as one-on-one mentoring from faculty. Throughout the program, residents assume primary responsibility for the evaluation and treatment of neurology inpatients while at the Vanderbilt University Hospital, the Nashville Veterans Administration Medical Center, the Stallworth Rehabilitation Hospital, the Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital, and Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. Residents rotate through the various subspecialty clinics, where they work closely with subspecialty faculty. In addition, residents maintain a continuity clinic composed of neurology outpatients at the Vanderbilt Clinic. Neurology is an independent department of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The Department is divided into specialized programs including: Movement Disorders, Consulting Practice, Epilepsy, Child Neurology, Sleep Disorders, Headache, Neuro-ophthlamology, Neuromuscular Disease, Neuro-oncology, Pain and Neuromagnetics, and Stroke/Critical Care. The Department of Neurology is actively committed to maintaining a diversified body of residents in an environment that is dedicated to excellence. To apply for a residency position, adult neurology candidates should use the NRMP website and follow the link to ERAS. Child neurology applicants should use the Central Application Service (CAS) on the San Francisco Matching Program site: http://www.sfmatch.org. The child neurology program accepts applications both through the CAS site for medical students and directly through Vanderbilt for current residents.
