NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Autism-specific training for leaders, teachers and counselors involved in summer camps will be held on March 1 at the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center. Space will be limited and early registration is encouraged by Feb. 14.

The training will be provided by the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center’s Treatment and Research Institute on Autism Spectrum Disorders (TRIAD), which conducts year-round training workshops for parents, educators and other professionals.

“It’s estimated that as many as one in 110 children are on the autism spectrum,” said Nicolette Brigham, Ph.D., TRIAD director of Training and Outreach. “Families need summer activities for children with autism, so that they can continue to make progress in developing social and communication skills, and camps are great learning opportunities for all children. With training, we believe that more summer camps could include children with autism.”

For several years TRIAD provided an inclusive Social Skills Summer Camp in Nashville. Recently, TRIAD has switched its focus from this direct service to providing training to other camps that would like to include children with autism alongside typically developing peers.

“Our intent is that by providing training to camp leaders, more children with autism will benefit from inclusive summer camp experiences all over Tennessee and the Mid-South region,” Brigham said.
