Andrew A. Shinar, M.D.

Dr. Shinar graduated from Stanford University in 1984 and received his M.D. from Columbia University in 1988. He completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Harvard University in 1993, and subsequently underwent fellowship training in Joint Replacement Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA.
Following his fellowship training he performed complex joint replacements and other orthopaedic surgeries for six years as a private practioner in Grosse Pointe, MI. During this time he headed the Joint Replacement program at Bon Secours Hospital in Grosse Pointe (one of Michigan's leading joint replacement hospitals) where he developed the innovative and successful Spa Program. This program sought to optimize all factors in the delivery of joint replacement surgery, from the patient's hospital experience to the replacement's long-term outcome.
Dr. Shinar has lectured extensively on hip and knee replacement surgery, and is active in many local and national societies.
His clinical interests at Vanderbilt include complex and usual hip and knee replacement, including revision hip and knee surgery, and unicondylar knee replacement.
Dr. and Lisa Shinar have two wonderful children: Paul, 7, and Audrey, 5.
Dan M. Spengler, M.D.
Orthopaedic Spine
Adult Spinal Injuries & Disorders

Dr. Spengler received his MD degree from the University of Michigan. After serving an internship at King County Hospital (Harborview Medical Center), he completed the Orthopaedic program at the University of Michigan Medical Center. After a one-year fellowship in Orthopaedic Biomechanics, Dr. Spengler joined the faculty at the University of Washington in Seattle. Nine years later he relocated to Nashville where he has served as Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at Vanderbilt since 1983.

In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Dr. Spengler runs a busy adult spine practice with a focus on the surgical management of patients who have a variety of spinal injuries and disorders. He is involved in clinical and research projects, which range from the composition of the intervertebral disc to clinical outcome studies on patients with low back disorders. He has received the Volvo Award for Low Back Research in 1990, the Kappa Delta Award for outstanding Orthopaedic Research in 1991, and the Cervical Spine Research Award in 1998. Dr. Spengler remains active in a number of national and international orthopaedic organizations. He has served as a director for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons including the office of president of the ABOS in 1993-1994. Dr. Spengler has recently been elected as the second president-elect for the American Orthopaedic Association.
Rick Davis , M.D.
Orthopaedic Spine
Adult Spinal Injuries & Disorders

Dr. Davis is the Director of the Vanderbilt Minimally Invasive Spine Center whichaims to treat leg and low back pain (disc herniations, spinal stenosis, discogenic pain)using microsurgical techniques. He has a particular interest in cervical spine problems and minimally invasive spine surgery. His research interests include clinical outcome studies that determine the effectiveness of non-operative and operative spine treatment.Dr. Davis played ice hockey at Cornell University and earned a degree in Economics,graduating in 1994. He attended medical school at Georgetown University andcompleted an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Wisconsin in 2003. In2004, Dr. Davis finished a Cervical and Lumbar Spine Surgery Fellowship at theUniversity of Pittsburgh, where he received specialized training in cervical spinedisorders and microsurgical techniques.
Ginger
E. Holt, MD
Musculoskeletal Oncology

Dr.
Holt joined the Vanderbilt Orthopaedic Institute in 2003. Her Clinical
interests include tissue engineering and cancer biology.
Dr. Holt received her BS at the University of Alabama at Birmingham,
graduationg magna cum laude with honors in biology research. She
received her MD from the University of Alabama School of Medicine
in 1996. Her Orthopaedic residency was completed here at Vanderbilt
Medical School in 2001 after which she completed a fellowship in
Orthopaedic Oncology at the University of Toronto/Mt. Sinai Hospital
and a fellowship in Adult Reconstruction Surgery in 2003 in Denver,
Colorado.
Carolyn Aubrey, RN, CP
Nurse Practitioner, Joint Replacement Center
Carolyn is the Nurse Practitioner for the Joint Replacement Center. Her expertise has made her a valuable asset in the department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation.
