M.L. “Chip” Routt, Jr., MD is an international expert in orthopaedic trauma and pelvic and acetabular fractures. Dr. Routt is a graduate of medical school at the University of Texas-Galveston, and completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Vanderbilt. He completed an orthopaedic trauma fellowship at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, WA. He stayed on as faculty there, and rapidly became a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Washington.He has played a monumental role in the development of the most highly sought after orthopaedic trauma fellowships in the country, with six fellows per year.
Beginning in the early 1990’s, Dr. Routt defined the anatomy, technique and surgical indications for closed reduction and percutaneous management of complex pelvic ring injuries. He has 19 years of experience of dealing with high energy trauma, as well as acetabular and pelvic fractures.
He is highly regarded as the model teacher, particularly in case discussion and in the small group setting. He is an early winner of the highly coveted A.O. Howard Rosen award, which recognizes the best lab instructor at A.O. courses. He is enthusiastic, engaging, and insightful. We welcome Dr. Routt back to Vanderbilt!
