Limb Sparing Surgery (LSS)
Limb sparing surgery is a special operative procedure that removes cancer in bone or soft tissue without amputation. Sparing the extremity creates a bone or soft tissue defect.
Thus, LSS has two parts:
- Removal of the cancer, and
- Reconstruction of the defect.
If LSS is performed well, the oncologic outcome is the same as that for amputation. Compared to amputation, LSS has a higher complication rate for infection, fracture, and reoperation. Typically, the salvaged extremity never completely returns to 100% normal function, even though it looks and moves in a near-normal manner.
