Orthopaedic Centers of Excellence

Arthritis & Joint Replacement Center

The Arthritis & Joint Replacement Center is an interdisciplinary facility located on 21st Avenue South in the Village at Vanderbilt, which provides comprehensive care for patients with problematic arthritis and rheumatic diseases. The orthopaedic faculty work in collaboration with rheumatologists, radiologists, occupational and physical therapists, a patient education coordinator, and a social worker, all in the same suite of offices. The Center is one of the first in the country with on-site implant design and bioskills laboratories, where hip prostheses are designed from computer images of X rays, and residents and ancillary staff learn how to use total joint components outside the operating room.

Spine Center

The Vanderbilt Spine Center consists of five orthopaedic physicians who provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of all forms of adult and pediatric spinal disorders. Areas of subspecialization include complex degenerative disorders of the cervical and lumbar spine, idiopathic and neuromuscular scoliosis and the treatment of spinal cord injury. The Spine Center was selected by the National Spine Network as one of 20 "Centers of Excellence" for spine care around the country.

Sports Medicine Complex

The Sports Medicine Complex, located in McGugin Center, is one of the first sports medicine clinics in the country to be housed in a university athletic center. In addition to orthopaedic faculty and residents, staff include full-time physical therapists and athletic trainers. Services at this facility are extended to the intercollegiate community and other local athletes.

Orthopaedic Hospital

An Orthopaedic Hospital, conveniently located across the street from the main hospital on the fifth and sixth floors of the Round Wing in Medical Center North, houses adult orthopaedic inpatients and employs an innovative concept in health care management. Members of the ancillary orthopaedic team double as X-ray technicians and phlebotomists. Digitized images of radiographs are transmitted to computer terminals in the Round Wing, and patients are admitted directly to the orthopaedic unit instead of going through the general Hospital Admitting Office. Pediatric orthopaedic patients are housed on the fifth and sixth floors of Children's Hospital, which is part of the main Hospital.

Stallworth Rehabilitation Hospital

The Vanderbilt Stallworth Rehabilitation Hospital is an 80-bed free-standing facility, the only one of its kind in Middle Tennessee. This disease-category oriented, comprehensive rehabilitation hospital includes 20 beds for children and 60 beds for adults. There are specific, disease-oriented units of 15 beds each for spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, and stroke rehabilitation; and a 15-bed unit for the general rehabilitation of patients with multiple trauma, arthritis, and amputations. A pathokinesiology laboratory provides video monitoring and dynamic electromyographic studies of gait and the upper extremities, as well as energy consumption studies. In addition, there are 5,000 square feet of space dedicated to basic research in bone and joint biomechanics and to the development of environmental control units, robotics, wheelchair seating systems, and other rehabilitation devices. This rehabilitation program provides extensive educational and research opportunities for the Departments of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation, Neurology, and Pediatrics.
