The following is a list of resources that you may find helpful. Some may have already been recommended by your health care providers. LOCAL RESOURCES:American Cancer Society: The American Cancer Society provides information about a wide variety of topics for many different cancers. The local office also provides transportation and/or housing (Hope Lodge) during active cancer treatment for those who qualify.
Breast Cancer Connection: This group combines health information, sharing, support and empowerment for women breast cancer survivors. There will be an expert speaker each session to address a current topic or issue relating to breast cancer. Informal discussion follows. The group meets from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Center for Breast Health at Saint Thomas Hospital on the third Wednesday of June, September, December and March.
Bridges to Care – Nashville Consortium of Safety Net Providers: “Bridges to Care (BTC) links uninsured residents of Nashville to a network of some 35 safety net primary health, dental, mental health, and substance abuse clinics that serve patients based on their ability to pay. BTC also provides help with prescription medications and transportation.” Website : http://btc.nashville.gov

Sisters Network – Nashville: Sisters Network® Inc. is the leading voice and only national African American breast cancer survivorship organization in the United States. Sisters Network promotes the importance of breast health through empowerment, support, breast education programs, resources, information, and research. The organization’s purpose is to save lives and provide a broader scope of knowledge that addresses the breast cancer survivorship crisis affecting African American women around the country.

Cancer Survivors Network: Created by and for cancer survivors, the Cancer Survivors Network (CSN) is a telephone and Internet-based support service. From the time of diagnosis and beyond, anyone experiencing cancer is invited to use this service. Listen to or read (Internet) 100 hours of pre-recorded discussions and stories. Find and connect with others like yourself. It is free, easy to use and accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Lance Armstrong Foundation: The Lance Armstrong Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in Austin, Texas. Founded in 1997 by cancer survivor and champion cyclist, Lance Armstrong, the LAF inspires and empowers people with cancer. From: www.laf.org
Man to Man: Sponsored by the American Cancer Society, the Man to Man program helps men cope with prostate cancer by providing community-based education and support to patients and their family members.
Men against Breast Cancer: Men Against Breast Cancer (MABC), the first national non-profit organization to provide targeted support services to educate and empower men to be effective caregivers when breast cancer strikes a female loved one; as well as, target and mobilize men to be active participants in the fight against breast cancer.
National Cancer Institute Cancer Information Service: The National Cancer Institute's (NCI's) Cancer Information Service (CIS) is a national information and education network. The CIS is a free public service of the NCI, the Nation's primary agency for cancer research.
National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship: The National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship is the oldest survivor-led cancer advocacy organization in the country and a highly respected authentic voice at the federal level, advocating for quality cancer care for all Americans and empowering cancer survivors.
National Lymphedema Network: The National Lymphedema Network (NLN) is an internationally recognized non-profit organization founded in 1988 to provide education and guidance to lymphedema patients, health care professionals and the general public by disseminating information on the prevention and management of primary and secondary lymphedema.
National Patient Advocate Foundation: National Patient Advocate Foundation (NPAF) is a national, non-profit organization that is dedicated to the mission of creating avenues of patient access through improved access to, and reimbursement for, evolving therapies, therapeutic agents, and devices through policy and legislative reform at the state and federal levels.
People Living With Cancer: Oncologist approved cancer information from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
Us TOO International: Us TOO is a grassroots organization started in 1990 by prostate cancer survivors to serve prostate cancer survivors, their spouses/partners and families.
The Wellness Community: TWC is an international non-profit organization dedicated to providing free support, education and hope to people with cancer and their loved ones. Through participation in professionally-led support groups, educational workshops, nutrition and exercise programs, and mind/body classes, people affected by cancer learn vital skills that enable them to regain control, reduce isolation and restore hope regardless of the stage of their disease.
Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization: A telephone and Internet-based site that offers breast cancer information, resources and support for patients, survivors, families, and friends. The telephone hotline is staffed by trained peer counselors who are breast cancer survivors. It is a convenient, anonymous resource for breast cancer information, as well as support. Callers can be matched with a survivor, patient and/or supporter having had a similar experience with breast cancer. On the Internet site, guests can submit questions concerning breast health and/or breast cancer, which are answered by a breast cancer survivor.

Hung Do, Jimmy Gilmore, Shane Kerlin and Darrell Lee and Julie Neaderthal receive certified MDT status (spine rehab) from McKenzie International! VUMC Rehabilitation Oncology Program will present “A rehabilitation oncology program for recipients of stem cell transplantation (sct): an evidence-based pilot program” at the American Physical Therapy Association’s Combined Sections Meeting, February 2008. |
