Zutter to join program for women in health leadership

BY: HEATHER L. HALL

6/02/2006 - Mary Zutter, M.D., director of Hematopathology and Ingram Professor of Cancer Research, has been selected to participate in the 12th class of the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women.

The ELAM Program brings together women who hold faculty positions around the country at various academic health centers (AHCs).

The yearlong program will prepare the participants for senior leadership roles at AHCs and is aimed at increasing the number of women holding those positions nationwide.

The intensive program will explore emerging issues in AHCs and include projects that focus on organizational development.

“One of the joys of being at Vanderbilt is that there are more women in leadership positions here than at other academic medical centers. Vanderbilt is unique in that regard,” said Zutter.

Lynn Matrisian, Ph.D., chair of Cancer Biology and an Ingram Professor of Cancer Research, encouraged Zutter to apply for the program.

“As an ELAM graduate, I am well aware of the value of the program in developing leadership and management skills for women in academic medicine. Mary demonstrates the qualities required for a good leader and manager, and has had substantial experience in these areas.

“However, she is always willing to learn and grow, and is highly receptive to advice and mentoring. I am convinced she can take her skills to the next level, and the ELAM program is the perfect avenue to achieve this goal,” Matrisian said.

Zutter, who is also co-leader of the Host-Tumor Interaction Program at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center and director of Vanderbilt's Residency Program in Pathology, will join women from more than 70 academic institutions from across the United States and Canada.

She is also a professor of Pathology, Cancer Biology, and Microbiology and Immunology.
