3/21/2008 - First-year School of Medicine students gained insight into the challenges of living with diabetes during the recent Diabetes Intersession. Students were "diagnosed" for 24 hours, learned diabetes management, checked their blood sugar six times a day and injected themselves with saline to mimic insulin shots. To simulate the vision loss some patients face, students wore eye patches for several hours an exercise that demonstrated the realities of diabetes complications.
