Light the Night event downtown on Oct. 1

BY: DAGNY STUART

9/25/2009 - This year's Light the Night Walk to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is slated for Thursday, Oct. 1, at LP Field in downtown Nashville.

This visually stunning event takes place at sunset, with participants carrying lighted balloons. White balloons are carried by cancer survivors, red balloons by supporters and gold balloons are carried in memory of those who have died from these diseases.

Vanderbilt's team for this year's event is led by co-captains Madan Jagasia, M.D., director of the Outpatient Stem Cell Transplant Program, and Utpal Dave, M.D., assistant professor of Medicine and Cancer Biology.

The 1.7 mile walk begins at the pedestrian bridge over the Cumberland River. Check in is at 6 p.m. and the opening ceremony begins at 7:15 p.m.

Funds raised during the event support cancer research, financial assistance to patients, educational materials and local support programs.
