Wang set to deliver Discovery Lecture

BY: MELISSA MARINO

10/23/2009 -

Xiaodong Wang, Ph.D., who holds the George L. MacGregor Distinguished Chair in Biomedical Science at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, will deliver the next Discovery Lecture on Oct. 29.

His lecture, “Understanding Cell Death,” will be at 4 p.m. in 208 Light Hall.

Wang, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, studies the pathways and biochemical mechanisms controlling different forms of programmed cell death in mammalian cells.

Wang and colleagues are developing chemical compounds that regulate these pathways, both as research tools and drug candidates for treating human diseases in which the cell death pathways are defective — including, for example, cancer, neurodegenerative disease, autoimmune disease and ischemic stroke.

This Discovery Lecture is sponsored by the Department of Pharmacology in honor of Allan D. Bass, M.D., who served as chair of Pharmacology from 1953 to 1973.
