Education

Fourth year Vanderbilt University School of Medicine student Roy Kiberenge matches into the Vanderbilt Anesthesiology residency program.

The extensive education and training programs offered by the Vanderbilt Department of Anesthesiology integrate scientific and clinical advances with current clinical practice to prepare students, residents, fellows, and faculty for productive careers as clinicians, academicians, and scientists. Our physician educators are nationally and internationally recognized as leaders in their fields, and the department successfully encourages residents to enter academic anesthesiology and develop careers focused on advancing knowledge in the specialty.

The department’s educational program consists of a combination of comprehensive didactic conferences, mentored clinical training, simulation training and self study. The ACGME core competencies - patient care, medical knowledge, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, practice-based learning, and systems-based practice - form a framework for our programs. Simulation training features prominently in the cognitive as well as procedural aspects of anesthesia education for medical students, residents and fellows.

Our four-year residency program offers 15 PGY-1 (Clinical Base Year) positions through the National Residency Matching Program.  In addition, fellowship training is offered in critical care medicine, cardiothoracic anesthesiology, obstetric anesthesiology, pain medicine, pediatric anesthesiology, regional anesthesiology, and anesthesiology research. Our training programs have a current enrollment of 62 residents, 18 clinical fellows and four research fellows.

Residents and fellows benefit from comprehensive training in all subspecialties of anesthesiology, including critical care and pain medicine.
