Perioperative TEE was originally confined to cardiac surgery and was generally performed by cardiologists and anesthesiologists with special training and certification in echocardiography. Having now become a standard-of-care in cardiac surgery and increasingly in use in non-cardiac surgery, echocardiography skills are being demanded of anesthesiologists/intensivists who have had little formal training.
TEE training is held at the Center for Experiential Learning & Assessment (CELA) at Vanderbilt University Medical School. This facility is a state-of-the-art center for simulation training. Hands-on sessions will include use of a TEE simulator.
