I just completed the first one-month resident rotation to AIC Kijabe Hospital in Kenya. Over the past month, I have had the opportunity to impact the lives of many sick Kenyans. More importantly though, I have had the chance to help teach and educate the student nurse anesthetists as they begin their intense nurse anesthesia training program. It has been a very gratifying experience contributing to the education of these bright young nurses, knowing that in just over a year they will be independently providing safe anesthesia care throughout the country of Kenya. My father, a retired professor of anesthesiology, also accompanied me on this trip. He, too, enjoyed this unparalleled experience of training the future nurse anesthetists of Kenya. My hope is that this marks the beginning of a close tie between the anesthesiology residents at Vanderbilt and the nurse anesthetists of AIC Kijabe Hospital.
