Dr. Alan J. Herline is a member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons as well as the New England Colon and Rectal Society. A board-certified specialist in the surgical care of disease affecting the colon and the rectum, Dr. Herline is trained in both minimally invasive procedures and traditional open procedures. His primary surgical interest is in all aspects of colon and rectal disease and treatment, and particularly in perianal Crohn’s disease, transrectal ultrasound, and laparoscopic surgical approaches to the following:
• colon cancer
• rectal cancer
• adenomatous polyps
• Crohns disease
• ulcerative colitis.

Dr. Herline is Associate Professor of Surgery and Biomedical Engineering in the Division of General Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He is a graduate in Engineering from Vanderbilt University and received his M.D. degree from the Medical College of Georgia in 1994. At Vanderbilt University Medical Center he completed his Residency in Surgery and received the Harwell Wilson Award for teaching and the Eugene Jabbour Award for best clinical paper. At the Lahey Clinic he completed his Fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery and received an award for best paper from the New England Colon and Rectal Society. Since starting at Vanderbilt he received a Career Development Award from the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.

Research and Publications:
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Herline has active, funded research projects for improving detection and monitoring of colorectal disease as well as for improving minimally invasive surgical treatment, including both laparoscopy and robotics. Over the last decade he has published more than 60 journal articles, book chapters and presentations. Review some of his abstracts on PubMed.
