Background
For more than three decades, Mr. Merin has worked in the field of ophthalmic imaging. Since arriving at Vanderbilt, he has applied principles of retinal imaging, epidemiology and healthcare delivery to tackle the problem of undetected diabetic eye disease in the community. Through a network of digital cameras, high-speed telecommunications and evidence-based image analysis, the Vanderbilt Ophthalmic Imaging Center screens thousands of people with diabetes, detects patients with sight-threatening conditions and helps them to obtain timely treatment. Merin is a regular speaker at national and international professional meetings and has worked with policymakers to reduce healthcare disparities. His professional bibliography includes more than 50 peer-reviewed papers and several book chapters.
