Faxing Patient Information

Does HIPAA prohibit us from faxing information to a patient when they request us to do so?

Sending faxes that include patient information poses risks that the information will be misdirected to an unintended recipient due to misdialing or an outdated number. Also, sending faxes to unattended machines or to recipients who are not expecting the fax poses the risk that unauthorized individuals will see the information.  If you chose to send a fax, remember to always use a fax cover sheet and to always check the fax number you are sending to make sure it is correct.  Please see PolicyFaxing Confidential Information - OP 10-40.12
