High-Salt Diet

Because low blood volume is found in many patients with POTS, patients are encouraged to increased their salt intake (up to 10 grams/day) in an attempt to increase plasma volume. Ideally, this can be done with diet alone, but when this is unsuccessful, prescription 1 g sodium chloride (salt) tablets can be given to supplement sodium intake. This should be accompanied by an increase in water intake.
