At the end of the summer, I chose to go back to school and take a light course load. I was an engineering student and taking the semester off meant losing a whole year of coursework. I was not going to let this illness do that to me. I rode the van for disabled students to class. I did my homework in my bed and I often feel asleep on my books. I would call friends and beg them to bring me food when I was too sick to get out of the bed. I had a stack of Post-It notes that I numbered based on the weeks left in school and I pulled one off ceremonially every week and told myself I could do it—I would finish the semester.
