Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences

The Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences (DHSS) is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of communication and related disorders: hearing, speech, language, swallowing, and developmental or cognitive problems that impair an individual’s ability to communicate. The Vanderbilt DHSS has four main service areas administered in the Division of Audiology and Division of Speech-Language Pathology:

Audiology (Pediatric and Adult Services)
Pediatric Speech-Language Programs
Pi Beta Phi Rehabilitation Institute
National Center for Childhood Deafness and Family Communication


Twelve computer-based research laboratories, a nationally-ranked graduate training program, and an ongoing continuing education program provide a solid base of new knowledge for this department’s broad range of patient care clinics. The Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences has three main divisions for academic and research activities. Included within this are:

The Department is a part of the Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center for Otolaryngology and Communication Sciences. It is located on floors six through ten of Medical Center East - South Tower at 1215 21st Avenue South, Nashville, Tennessee.
