Department of Otololaryngology

Vanderbilt’s Department of Otolaryngology is ranked among the nation’s best and first in the state of Tennessee. It is the tertiary care referral center for middle Tennessee for all general ENT services. Otolaryngology is the complete medical and surgical management of both general and complex problems dealing with congenital, infectious and inflammatory, and benign and malignant conditions of the ear, nose, paranasal sinuses, pharynx, larynx, oral cavity, neck, thyroid and parathyroid glands, salivary glands, tracheobronchial tree, and esophagus.

Otolaryngology was re-established at Vanderbilt as a Department in 1986 through the efforts of a number of Vanderbilt-educated and trained otolaryngologists.  Through their dedication and commitment, Vanderbilt agreed to establish the department and invited Dr. Robert Ossoff to chair the new department in 1986. The Department has developed very positively and is ranked among the best in the country.

Research and Medical Training

The Department has a strong basic and clinical research program focusing on many of the emerging frontiers of otolaryngology.  Laryngeal implants, neurolaryngology, laser surgery, otoacoustic emissions, vestibular disorders, head and neck cancer, sleeping disorders, and outcomes are just a few of the critical areas in which we are conducting important research.

The Department has developed one of the most competitive otolaryngology residency programs in the United States of America.  As one of the nation’s top ten otolaryngology residency programs, the department is able to attract the most highly qualified residents coming from many of the country’s top medical schools.  The residency program receives over 300 applications for four positions each year.
