Social Sciences and Community Engagement Working Group
In 2011 Dr. D’Aquila reached out to engage 20 faculty members at Vanderbilt and Meharry Medical College with expertise in behavior, social sciences, prevention, ethics and policy. Most have not previously worked in HIV/AIDS but have highly relevant expertise. These experts have responded with enthusiasm, including R. Jay Turner (chair-elect of the American Sociological Association, and chair of its Medical Sociology Section). Dr. Turner leads an RO1-funded Vanderbilt-Meharry collaboration (“Health Disparities and Stress Hypothesis”) to study race and sex disparities in a sample of 1600 adults in Nashville.
