In 2009, 50% of South Nashville residents lived in food deserts with little access to healthy food choices. They traveled an hour to the closest supermarket, which limited quality, amount, and frequency of food purchases. The Nashville Mobile Market brings produce, lean meats, dairy, and non-perishable items to food desert communities.
The NMM strives to decrease incidence of chronic conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension by increasing access to and knowledge about healthy foods. Community residents purchase goods with credit card, cash, or SNAP benefits and receive recipes and cooking demonstrations. Continuing Vanderbilt research evaluates long-term impact on eating patterns and health. The Nashville Mobile Market serves Edgehill and East Nashville, with plans to expand.
