The Research Coordinator establishes clinical research protocols developed both at Vanderbilt as well as those associated with multi-institutional trials. He assesses patients for their qualifications to join those trials and provides care continuity during the trials both on an inpatient and outpatient basis. These trials relate to all aspects of Colon and Rectal Surgery including benign disease, cancer, and inflammatory bowel disease.

Mr. Klintworth has 20 years of critical care experience and over 5 years of clinical trials experience that substantially improves his abilities to assess patients and run trials.

Current Trials Include:

  • Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) trials utilizing Celebrex (Pfizer) to decrease polyp formation (in children) - pending IRB approval as of 2/09
  • Affect of a unique wound sponge to decrease post-operative wound infections (Innocoll) - nearing accrual completion as of 2/09
  • Post-operative ileus prevention trials (Adolor and Progenics) - both completed, 2008; new trial pending
  • Stage II colon cancer study in conjunction with Washington University - accruing as of 2/09
  • ACOSOG Z6051 Comparing open and laparoscopic treatment of rectal cancer, accrual starting 2/09
