Dr. Paul E. Wise is a specialist in the surgical care of patients with diseases of the colon and rectum. A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS), and the Southeastern Surgical Congress (SES), as well as member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and Society of Surgeons of the Alimentary Tract, Dr. Wise is trained to use the latest minimally invasive surgical techniques to achieve the best possible long-term outcomes for the surgical treatment of patients with colorectal disease. Dr. Wise is Assistant Professor of Surgery, Colon and Rectal Surgery, in the Division of General Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center as well as the Director of the Vanderbilt Hereditary Colorectal Cancer Registry. He is a magna cum laude graduate in Chemistry (B.S., 1992) from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. and received his M.D. degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD in 1996. He completed his Residency in General Surgery at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 2003, including two years as Resident in Research in the Vanderbilt Division of Hepatobiliary Surgery and Liver Transplantation. During that time he received the H. William Scott Surgical Research Award, the Harwell Wilson Award for teaching, and the Hillman Award for “the resident deemed as the best teacher and role model by third and fourth year medical students.” He completed his Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis/Barnes-Jewish Hospital in 2004. Dr. Wise is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery.
Research interests:
Dr. Wise’s primary clinical research interests focus on hereditary colon and rectal cancer syndromes as well as outcomes of the treatment of colon and rectal disease. His basic science interests focus on genetic and mucosal factors affecting colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease.
Publications:
Dr. Wise has published over fifty journal articles, book chapters and presentations examining various aspects of liver disease, organ transplantation, gall bladder disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and colorectal cancer. Review some of his abstracts on PubMed.
