Continuing nursing education per the American Nurses Association involves "systematic professional learning experiences designed to augment the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of nurses and therefore enrich nurses' contributions to quality healthcare." The knowledge, skills, or attitudes gained from CNE activities can be applied regardless of the activity participant's employer (TNA 2015 Provider Manual).

Target audience: nurses preparing for entry level into the profession
Information that educates for work at a specific institution, teaches and tests for skill competency or addresses institution-based standards of practice.
Information that addresses institution-based standards of practice or provides information that prepares nurse to utilize new tools or information specific to the work setting.
Example of an Eligible and Ineligible Activity
The purpose of this activity is to describe the new national guidelines for hypothermia treatment. Rationale: Provides continuing education which addresses new standards of practice which is transferable to other job settings.
The purpose of this activity is to explain the functionality of Vandyworks. Rationale: Educates for work at a specific institution and the information is not transferable to other job settings.
