This initiative was funded through a Great Ideas for Vanderbilt Medical Education (GIVME) grant program here at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine out of our Office for Teaching and Learning in Medicine. In this study we created standardized patient cases around substance use and abuse. Participants complete a pre- and post-assessments to identify their baseline and changes in current knowledge of the course content and the attitudes toward screening and brief interventions around substance abuse. During the course participants learn about a variety of issues dealing with controlled substances, proper prescribing, how to identify drug seeking patients and developing behaviors and skills to help prevent misprescribing in their practices. They then have two opportunities to practice their skills in a safe learning environment.
