Dr. Marion L. Messersmith joined the Vanderbilt Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2008. Prior to Vanderbilt, he was in private practice based in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Previous professional experience includes appointments as Chairman and Program Director for the Department of Orthdontics at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, Texas, and Chairman of the Department of Orthodontics at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas where he 'fathered' the Tri-Service Orthodontic Residency. His professional experience also includes service with the 475th Medical Group at Yokota Air Base in Tokyo, Japan and the 50th Tactical Fighter Wing at Hahn Air base in Germany. He served as Chief Consultant in Orthodontics to the USAF Surgeon General from 1993 to 1997. He is a recipient of the United States Air Force Legion of Merit Medal and numerous other medals from the United States Air Force and United States Army for meritorious service.
Dr. Messersmith treats simple to complex dentofacial and craniofacial surgical cases. His special clinical interest focuses on the multidisciplinary management of temporomandibular joint problems. Research interests include studies on the bond strength of orthodontic adhesives and genetic factors causing congenitally missing teeth.
