Assistant Professor, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Matthew Mizukawa, D.M.D., comes to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from private practice in St. George, Utah. He is currently board eligible with the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and is a member of the American Dental Association and the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. His clinical interests are maxillofacial trauma and reconstruction, orthognathic surgery, maxillofacial pathology, and implant rehabilitation of the jaws.

Education
Dr. Mizukawa graduated with a B.S. in Neuroscience and a minor in Japanese from Brigham Young University in 2003. He then received his Doctorate of Dental Medicine from the University of Nevada in 2007, where he received the Oral Biology Award from the American Association of Oral Biologists. He began his surgical training at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and in 2009, the Vanderbilt University Department of Emergency Medicine awarded him “Best Consultant” for his efforts in treating patients with oral surgical needs.

Post-graduate Training
Dr. Mizukawa completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2011. During this time, he also fulfilled a three-week cleft lip and palate rotation in Bogota, Colombia as part of the department’s international surgery education program.

Research
Dr. Mizukawa has engaged in a number of research efforts. His research on the development of a surgical instrument used in orthognathic and TMJ surgery was published in the Journal of American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He also contributed to a study on a new immunohistochemical marker for Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis, which increases the specificity of diagnosis of this condition.
