William H. Nealon, M.D., F.A.C.S., joined the Vanderbilt faculty September 1, 2009. He is Vice-Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Associate Surgeon-in-Chief in the Vanderbilt University Hospital. Dr. Nealon previously served at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas, from 1985 to 2009, where he was the Leonard and Marie Aronsfeld Rosoff Professor of Surgery, Professor of Radiology, and Director of the Pancreatobiliary Surgery Service.
Dr. Nealon’s extensive experience in all aspects of surgery has emphasis in the surgical management of pancreatic and biliary diseases and therapeutic ERCP. His research interests include evaluating outcomes of operative and nonoperative measures used to treat patients with complications of acute and chronic pancreatitis. He is credited with establishing the role played by pancreatic ductal anatomy on the natural course and outcomes in pancreatitis, thus facilitating the choice of operative or nonoperative modalities as therapies. He has also participated in studies using large database evaluations to determine outcomes in pancreatic cancer and cystic neoplasms of the pancreas.
Dr. Nealon is Co-Director of the Pancreas Club, an international organization devoted to the management of diseases of the pancreas. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of professional organizations that include the American Surgical Association.
