Program History

Diabetes in Motion was developed under the inspiration of Paula Harper and Dr. Stephen Davis.  Paula Harper is a clinical nurse at the Nashville Veterans Administration Hospital and a Type 1 diabetes patient.  Paula formed the organization Diabetes Exercise and Sports Association (DESA) to promote awareness and education of diabetes and management for individuals who participated in sports and exercise.  She along with Dr. Davis felt that a program for the community would help raise awareness for all patients with diabetes on the importance of exercise in their diabetes management.

The program's very successful start in August of 2003 merited over 300 participants and many health care professionals being involved in a tremendous day event.  With the program's success, an annual event was planned for the following years.  In 2005, Diabetes in Motion again yielded a very successful program for the community and surrounding areas.
