VEI is very excited to announce that our chairman, Dr. Paul Sternberg while maintaining his position as chair of the Eye Institute, has also accepted a new promotion in leadership positions within the School of Medicine and the Medical Center. He has taken on the roles of Chief Medical Officer for Adult Services and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Clinical Affairs at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Congratulations to Dr. Sternberg on this wonderful achievement.

![]() | Mark D. Ewald, M.D. Assistant Professor Cornea and External Disease |
Mark D. Ewald, MD will be joining the Vanderbilt Eye Institute with a focus on Cornea and External Disease. Dr. Ewald received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine and completed his residency in ophthalmology at New York University and Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital. Dr. Ewald most recently completed a fellowship in cornea and external disease at the Wills Eye Institute at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.
Dr. Ewald is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. His areas of focus include cataract extraction, corneal transplants and refractive surgery.
A Vanderbilt University alumnus, he graduated cum laude from the College of Arts and Science with a B.S. in Mathematics. Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, Dr. Ewald has interests in traveling, running and Vanderbilt University athletics.

Janice C. Law, MD will be joining the Vanderbilt Eye Institute with a focus on Vitreoretinal Surgery and as Associate Director for Resident and Medical Student Education in Ophthalmology. Dr. Law received her medical degree from Wright State University School of Medicine in Dayton, Ohio. She was Chief Resident at the Kresge Eye Institute in Detroit, Michigan where she completed her residency in Ophthalmology. Dr. Law recently completed a fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery at the Vanderbilt Eye Institute.
Dr. Law is a member of the Tennessee Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society for Retina Specialists, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and American Academy of Ophthalmology. Her clinical interests include diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular disorders, age-related macular degeneration, ocular trauma and intraocular tumors. In addition, she has a special interest in undergraduate and graduate medical education curriculum development and leadership development. In her free time, she enjoys photography.
Nancy M. Benegas, M.D.
Assistant Professor
Pediatric Ophthalmology / Adult Strabismus
Nancy Mayer Benegas, MD, is joining the Vanderbilt Eye Institute in January 2010 as a board certified, fellowship trained pediatric ophthalmologist. For the past 11 years, Dr. Benegas has practiced pediatric ophthalmology in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, where she received multiple recognitions for the quality of her care and teaching. She has expertise in all aspects of pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus, including diagnosing and treating amblyopia, strabismus, tear duct obstructions, iritis, screening and aftercare of premature infants with retinopathy of prematurity. In addition to caring for children, she also has a special interest and expertise in treating adults with double vision and strabismus. She is particularly adept at managing and operating on patients with complicated strabismus from trauma, thyroid eye disease, and reoperations. She moves to Nashville and Vanderbilt with her husband and two boys.
