Cornea and External Diseases

The cornea filters out some of the most damaging ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths in sunlight. It acts as a lens and protects the eye from germs and dust. When light strikes your cornea, it bends — or refracts — the incoming light onto the crystalline lens. The lens then focuses the light onto the retina, the paper-thin tissue at the back of the eye that helps translate light into vision. Any type of cornea problem should be addressed quickly by an eye care professional. Vanderbilt Eye Institute offers quality care for patients with disorders related to the cornea:

  • Cataracts
  • Corneal Decompensation
  • Corneal Dystrophies
  • Corneal Erosions
  • Corneal Scarring
  • Corneal Trauma
  • Corneal Ulcer/Microbial Keratitis
  • Ocular Cicatricial Pemphigoid
  • Pterygium
