Low Vision
Low vision is eyesight in the range of 20/50 to 20/8000 that cannot be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. Additionally, individuals with low vision may have normal central vision but suffered visual field loss from stroke or glaucoma. Low vision most commonly occurs from age-related eye diseases such as macular degeneration and glaucoma, but children can have low vision as a result of multiple genetic conditions.
Vanderbilt offers comprehensive treatment to children and adults with low vision. Our faculty partake in national research projects on low vision and have developed devices for the treatment of vision impairment. Vanderbilt administers a landmark program called Project PAVE (Providing Access to the Visual Environment) in conjunction with the Tennessee Department of Education and Vanderbilt University. This offers low-vision education and training for children and young adults up to age 21.
