2014 Resident Awards

Clark Kensinger, M.D., received the Candle Award, which is presented by Vanderbilt medical students to those individuals who have devoted themselves to teaching and mentoring, and who have a positive impact on the lives of physicians-in-training. Only two Candle Awards were given throughout the institution. Colleen Kiernan, M.D., and William McMaster, M.D., received the H. William Scott Jr. Research Scholarship  given to those residents in General Surgery for support of attendance at the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress, and honoring those residents who have a strong interest in research and exemplify the spirit of Dr. Scott, esteemed chair of Vanderbilt Surgical Sciences from 1952 to 1982.

Melissa Stewart, M.D., received the 2014 H. William Scott Jr. Research Scholarship – given to those residents in General Surgery for support of attendance at the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress, and honoring those residents who have a strong interest in research and exemplify the spirit of Dr. Scott, esteemed chair of Vanderbilt Surgical Sciences from 1952 to 1982.

Clark Kensinger, M.D., Rondi Kauffman, M.D., Kristy Kummerow, M.D., and Michael Vella, M.D., received the J. Kenneth Jacobs Fellowship in Surgery  established to provide funds for support of attendance at the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress, and honoring those residents spending one to two years in a research laboratory at Vanderbilt or another institution. Dr. Jacobs was in attendance and was thanked for his ongoing support of resident research at Vanderbilt. Kevin Sexton, M.D., received the Alfred Blalock Surgical Resident Award  established in 1988 to honor the resident whose published laboratory or clinical research marks an outstanding contribution to medical research.

Vance Albaugh, M.D., and Sekhar Padmanabhan, M.D., (not shown) received the 2014 J. Kenneth Jacobs Fellowship in Surgery – established to provide funds for support of attendance at the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress, and honoring those residents spending one to two years in a research laboratory at Vanderbilt or another institution. Dr. Jacobs was in attendance and was thanked for his ongoing support of resident research at Vanderbilt.

Leigh Anne Dageforde, M.D., received the 2014 Alfred Blalock Surgical Resident Award – established in 1988 to honor the resident whose published laboratory or clinical research marks an outstanding contribution to medical research.

 

Josh Smith, M.D., received the Joseph W. & Bonnie Graves Award in Surgery  established in 1995 and selected by the residents to pay tribute to the resident who demonstrates commitment, interest and effectiveness in the teaching of fellow residents. He also received the Harwell Wilson Award  given annually by the faculty to the chief resident who epitomizes the ideals of dedication to patient care, research and education.

Michael Corey, M.D., and Andrew J. Murphy, MD received the 2014 Harwell Wilson Award – given annually by the faculty to the chief resident who epitomizes the ideals of dedication to patient care, research and education.

Andrew J. Murphy, MD also received the 2014 Joseph W. & Bonnie J. Graves Award for Excellence in Teaching.  This award is presented to the surgery resident in recognition of commitment, interest, and effectiveness in the teaching of fellow residents, having been selected by those colleagues in the General Surgery Residency Training Program

 

 

Eric Rellinger, M.D., and Brian Craig, M.D., received the 2014 Lester Williams Research Scholarship – given to those residents in General Surgery for support of attendance at the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress.
