Dr. Karp joined the Vanderbilt surgical faculty in 2011 as Director of the Vanderbilt Transplant Center. Over the next four years, the center provided patients outstanding outcomes and experienced a period of significant growth to become one the largest centers in the country.
In 2015, Dr. Karp was appointed Chairman of the Department of Surgery and H. William Scott Professor. The Department consists of general surgery including bariatrics and colorectal, trauma and critical care including burns, transplantation, vascular surgery, and surgical oncology.
Dr. Karp’s clinical interests include liver transplantation in the adult and pediatric population, kidney and pancreas transplantation, and general surgery in patients with liver or kidney disease. Dr. Karp is active nationally in transplantation and has served in numerous leadership positions including chair of the organizing committee for the American Transplant Congress. He currently serves on the Liver-Intestine Committee of the United Network for Organ Sharing.
Dr. Karp’s clinical research interests include increasing the number of organs available for transplantation and optimizing the use of all organs to improve results. In addition, his lab is developing a test to diagnose gastrointestinal bleeding.
Dr. Karp maintains a funded basic research laboratory investigating the mechanisms of liver regeneration. His lab has identified molecules and mechanisms necessary for liver regeneration and an endogenous pathway that limits regeneration to preserve liver function.
Dr. Karp has lectured around the world on liver physiology and transplantation and serves on the editorial board of the American Journal of Transplantation and the Journal of Cellular and Molecular Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He has published numerous original manuscripts, reviews, book chapters, and a book.
