Associate Professor of Surgery

Dr. Karp joined the Vanderbilt surgical faculty from the Harvard Medical School in Boston where he served as assistant professor of surgery, as well as Director of both the Pancreas Transplant Program and the Transplant Fellowship Training Program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Before joining the Harvard faculty, Karp served as instructor and then assistant professor of Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. 

His clinical expertise encompasses liver, kidney and pancreas transplantation, vascular access and general surgery. He is currently the co-chairman of the Cell Transplant Committee of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS), and is co-chair of the American Transplant Congress organizing committee for 2012. In 2006, Dr. Karp was honored with the American Society of Transplant Surgeons Vanguard Prize.

Research

Dr. Karp’s research focuses on the biology of liver development and liver regeneration, applying this knowledge to liver renewal or replacement. He is currently funded by NIH and non-profit organizations.
