Lwala Community Clinic, Rongo Kenya: Providing primary health care and addressing HIV/AIDS in rural Kenya : Lwala Clinic Objectives

The main goal of the project is to have a viable year round clinic to meet the basic health needs of the Lwala community. The objectives of the Lwala Community Clinic Project are to:

  • Improve access to general primary health care
  • Educate families-> Recognition and prevention of simple diseases
  • Provide first line intervention in medical emergencies
  • Form network for referral of difficult cases to bigger hospitals
  • Improve women's health education- reproductive health, pre and postnatal care, child nutrition, capacity building for local traditional birth attendants
  • Improve child immunization outreach
  • Facilitate village outreach by specialists (eye doctors, obgyn, dentists etc)
  • Promote school health and hygiene via outreach to local primary schools
  • Investigate clean water possibilities for the village
  • Provide Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) for HIV/AIDS
  • Promote HIV AIDS awareness within the community
  • Use surveys, questionnaires etc to collect more information on the healthcare needs of the community
  • Provide shared learning experience and cultural exchange between visiting American groups and local health providers and community members.
  • Collaborate with American university healthcare providers in capacity building and training of local health care providers, community health workers, and traditional birth attendants while exposing the Americans to the challenges of healthcare practice in a rural village in a developing country.
