NNIS/NHSN

National Health & Safety Network (NHSN)

Since 1970, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have collected data on the incidence and etiologies of hospital-acquired infections, including CVC-related BSIs. This database, formerly known as the National Nosocomial Infection Surveillance System (NNIS), is now under the National Health and Safety Network (NHSN).  VUMC participates in this voluntary reporting system, along with over 300 other hospitals.  Data is collected on daily rounds by each hospital’s Infection Control Practitioners, and uploaded to the CDC mainframe at the end of each month.  Participation in NHSN allows hospitals to compare themselves to similar institutions around the country, while measuring themselves against benchmark infection rates established by the CDC.
