Ultrasound (TCD and Carotid) Instructions

Ultrasound tests use sound waves to image inner body tissues and blood flow.

TEST DURATION:  It takes about 60 minutes to complete.

HOW TO PREPARE

There are no special preparation for these tests.

THE TEST

A small amount of water-soluble gel is applied to the skin over the area to be examined. The gel does not harm your skin or stain your clothes.  A small device (transducer) is held on the skin’s surface until the diagnostic information has been recorded.  You will need to keep still and avoid talking during the test.  For some specialized tests, a catheter may be placed in a vein for a few minutes.

AFTER THE TEST

There are no specific discharge instructions.  You can resume your normal activities.
