Holding Room/PACU Departments
My name is Russell Kunic, FNP-BC, and I am the manager of patient care services for the Vanderbilt Preoperative Evaluation Center (VPEC).
To ensure that preoperative patients are properly evaluated and that all necessary testing and other patient information are in hand before procedures, Vanderbilt University Medical Center offers a free evaluation and consultation service for these patients. VPEC faculty and staff perform comprehensive patient assessments and consult with our patients’ primary care physicians, specialists, and surgeons to make decisions regarding the need for preoperative testing to assess the patients’ overall risk for surgery. This better ensures patient safety and helps prevent surgical delays and cancellations. Once the patient evaluation is completed at VPEC, it becomes part of the patient’s electronic medical record and is accessible by any Vanderbilt medical provider with internet and security access.
VPEC has received several significant industry accolades, including the 2009 Top Performer Award given by Professional Research Consultants, Inc. In 2012 – for the fourth year in a row – the service received a Professional Research Consultants, Inc. patient satisfaction award, the coveted 5-Star Award for Overall Quality of Care. This means a score in the 90th – 99th percentile based on 2011 calendar year results and as compared to similar centers nationwide. The award was given to two VPEC clinic sites. VPEC leadership is frequently consulted by other hospitals wanting to improve their preoperative processes.
