Scope of Service


The pharmacy is structured to provide the scope of service required of all patients being treated at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. This is accomplished by approximately 245 staff members working from 12 different pharmacy locations. The staff is aided by hospital and pharmacy information systems to provide the best possible up-to-date patient information and decision support.

A complete IV admixture and unit dose system provide medications in ready-to-use form and is supplemented by decentralized automated dispensing devices providing controlled ready access to medications. These systems and resources equip the pharmacy to meet the complex treatment and support required of patients in an academic medical center. Specialized clinical staff practice in areas with complex and high-risk medication therapy including pediatrics, transplantation, medicine, critical care, ambulatory care, geriatrics, oncology and trauma. Drug information and pharmacokinetic services are provided through these specialists and on-request for all patients. Contract pharmacy services are provided to Stallworth Rehabilitation Hospital and the Psychiatric Hospital at Vanderbilt.
