All Poison Specialists at Tennessee Poison Center are registered nurses, pharmacists or physicians. The American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) credentials a nurse or phamacist as a Certified Specialist in Poison Information (CSPI) once standard requirements have been met. Certification requires passing a standardized national exam, handling a minium of 2,000 human exposure cases, and working a minum of 16 hours per week in the poison center. Tennessee Poison Center has twelve CSPIs on staff.
Tennessee Poison Center has three board certified toxicology physicians on staff. Donna Seger, MD, is Executive Director and Medical Director of TPC. Saralyn Williams, MD, is Toxicology Attending Physician. John Benitez, MD, MPH, is Toxicology Attending Physican and Managing Director of TPC. All three physicians are board-certified in Medical Toxicology and Emergency Medicine; in addition, Dr. Benitez is board- certified in Occupational Medicine.
These physicians admit overdose patients, consult on pediatric overdose patients, staff a toxicology clinic, perform chart review and quality assurance in the Poison Center daily, and provide medical back-up call to the poison specialists 24 hours a day.
The Director of Community Outreach is a liaison between the community and TPC. She is responsible for all outreach and education activity at the Poison Center. In addition, there is an Administrative Manager and Program Coordinator that provide adminstrative and outreach support.
