PICC Service

PICC Nursing at Vanderbilt

The PICC Service consists of 7 specially trained nurses and an interventional radiologist medical director.  The PICC Service provides service to adult and pediatric populations both inpatient and outpatient.

Sending My Patient for a PICC

Pediatric patients require two and sometimes three staff members when placing PICC lines.  For this reason, rarely will a pediatric patient be done after hours or on weekends and holidays.  If it is absolutely necessary, staff from the patient's nursing unit and possibly the Medical Staff may have to accompany the patient and assist with the procedure. These arrangements must be made before the PICC service on-call staff arrives at the hospital.

Adult patients who are confused or with limited ROM/mobility will require staff from the patient's nursing unit to assist with the procedure.  These arrangements must be made before the PICC service on-call staff arrives at the hospital.

Weekend Coverage

Effective January 1, 2008 the PICC service will have one clinical person available to place PICC lines on weekends at VUH from 0730-1800. A Wiz order or written order is required. Due to limited staffing resources, PICC lines will be placed in order of priority. The priority selection criteria can be accessed  from the VUMC home page by typing "PICC service weekend coverage" or at the following website:
