Student Placement

How We Place Our Student Interns

During the second semester of the program, Project Opportunity staff begin the process of finding employment opportunities that match the skill sets of our student-interns. Photobucket Our goal is to place qualified workers in regular full or part-time positions at Vanderbilt and, at the same time, fill a business need. Project Opportunity continues to build bridges between our program and departments throughout Vanderbilt Medical Center; this affords our student-interns the possibility to be offered directed employment opportunities by the end of the program. Only those participants who meet the general and position-specific eligibility guidelines are recommended for open positions by the Project Opportunity staff.

How Student Interns Get Hired
We at Project Opportunity do not create positions for our student-interns. However, once we feel a participant is qualified we begin the process of locating available positions. The Department Managers ultimately are in charge of hiring whomever they feel is the most qualified applicant to their position, whether the applicant is a Project Opportunity student-intern or an outside applicant. However, department managers do rely heavily on the recommendations of the Project Opportunity staff. If it fits the business need of a department, we work with them to restructure
any preexisting positions to suit the needs of our applicant, and the Hospital.

Jobs Outside Vanderbilt
Photobucket
At the end of the program year if an opening is not available at Vanderbilt, Project Opportunity staff will continue to look for open positions. In addition, we also help the family supports of our student-interns with finding resources outside of our program.

Ongoing Support
If hired by Vanderbilt, Project Opportunity graduates no longer rotate among various departments or positions but become employees of the department in which they are placed. Over the term of their employment, the graduates continue to receive long-term support from the Project Opportunity staff.
