Vanderbilt Chapter Committees
In order to facilitate the success of our goals, the Vanderbilt SNMA has created several committees and endeavors, each charged with effecting a movement towards a diverse health care system. These committees include:
Community Service Committee - Created in 2010, the goal of the Community Service Committee is to inculcate within the chapter members an air of service, and support positive health changes especially in socioeconomically disadvantaged populations around the Vanderbilt Community. Within the Community Service Committee is the Health Care Disparities Committee, which is charged with the construction of an academic programming week, highlighting health care disparities within all disparity groups represented by the Vanderbilt Medical Center.
MAPS Liaison Committee - The MAPS committee seeks to encourage the enrollment of under represented minorities and those interested providing healthcare to the underserved into the various health care professions. We are partnered with the MAPS chapter within Vanderbilt University Undergraduate Campus and seek to serve as mentors for students throughout their academic sojourn.
Recruitment Committee - The aim of the committee is to support and encourage under-represented minorities who visit Vanderbilt University Medical Center while interviewing, or visiting. The committee supports students through the provision of housing during their visit, casual conversation with members of the Vanderbilt Community and continued support after their visit has ended.
Mentoring Endeavor - Vandy Vision
Vandy Vision is a semester long, pipeline program targeted at freshman and sophomore high school students in the Metro Nashville Public school system. The program is entering its 3rd year in the spring of 2013. Last year, there were 16 high school students paired with 20 Vanderbilt medical students. Students met four times throughout the spring semester to discuss topics such as high school graduation requirements, college entrance exams and requirements, as well as social issues including social media and personal security. The year ended with a pizza party and bowling.
