Department of Urologic Surgery

Medical Student Education

Two to three third-year Vanderbilt Medical Students are usually rotating on the service at any time.  A fourth-year medical school elective is also available, and for most of the year we also have one or two students at this level on our service.

All of our residents are expected to participate in teaching of the students.  The students see patients on rounds and accompany the the inpatient team on morning rounds.  Students are actively encouraged to become involved in the operating room, management of inpatients, and seeing patients in consultation.  Fourth-year students, usually those interested in Urology, also may choose a research elective in Urology or a month on the Pediatric Urology service.

In general, the medical students indicate that the experience on the Urology service is one of the best in the institution.  Both at the 3rd and 4th year levels, rotation in Urology is oversubscribed by the medical students.

Visiting students who are interested in doing a rotation or clerkship in Urology or Pediatric Urology should visit the Visiting Student Webpage for instructions on how to do so.  All visiting rotations are arranged through the Office of the Registrar and Student Records.
