Hello,

I’m Kim Linville, MSN, RN.  I am the manager of the Inpatient Medicine unit located on 8 North and 8 South of Vanderbilt University Hospital. 

To work in the Inpatient Medicine unit, our nurses need strong assessment skills, the ability to identify Basic Arrhythmia strip interpretations, able to adapt easily to new challenges, and strong communication skills to care for our patient population.

About Us

8th Floor Inpatient Medicine is comprised of two units and located on the 8th floor of VUH. 8 North is a 30-bed unit, including four semi-private beds. 8 South is a 24-beds unit, including four semi-private beds. There are two negative air-flow (isolation rooms) located on 8 North. There are 27 telemetry monitoring transmitters available on the 8th floor which can be used for patients in any patient room on the 8th floor.

As an Inpatient Medicine unit at Vanderbilt Medical Center, we are dedicated to our patients by providing quality care with attention to clinical expertise, evidence-based practice, patient safety and positive outcomes.  We utilize an interdisciplinary team approach along the continuum of care in an effort to provide balance for the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual needs for every patient and their family. Our interdisciplinary team consists of physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, dieticians, nursing leadership, and educators. We make a difference!

8 North and 8 South care for adults and geriatric patients.

Services include, but are not limited to care of adult patients with a variety of medical diagnoses of the pulmonary system, gastrointestinal system, renal system, endocrine system, infectious diseases, circulatory system, neurological system, dermatological disorders, and rheumatologic disorders.

Staffing
The Leadership team is comprised of a Unit manager covering both 8 North and 8 South, and 6 Clinical Staff Leaders. The unit also has the support of a Nursing Education Specialist, and Administrative Assistant.
The staff is comprised of Registered Nurses, Care Partners, and Medical Receptionists.

Nursing assignments are determined by both acuity and patient census. Routine ratios are 1:5, but may require 1:6.  Care partners routinely have a 9-10 patient assignment.
 

Orientation
All RNs are required to attend centralized hospital and clinical nursing, orientation, in addition to unit orientation. Orientation is individualized as needed but lasts on average 6-8 weeks. Unit-based orientation is preceptor-based. Basic arrhythmia didactic classes and testing is required as well. BLS is an additional requirement.
 

Experience Needed to work in your unit/area
RNs with recent experience is preferred, but not required.
 

Facts about Our Unit
8 North and 8 South staff participate in one, Shared Governance Unit Board on even months, alternating with Staff Meetings on odd months.
