I’m Debbie Shinkle, RN, MHA, MEd. I am the manager of the Pediatric Hematology and Oncology unit located on the 6th floor of Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt.
To work in the Hematology and Oncology unit, our nurses strive to provide the best care to our patients and their families that may sometimes be in the hospital for extended periods of time. As part of orientation, our nurses take part in a two-day chemotherapy bio-therapy course and participate in workshops on the care of stem cell transplants and radioactive therapy.

The Vanderbilt Childhood Cancer Program is a collaboration between the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt and the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. Our unit is comprised of two smaller units called “pods”.
Our unit is dedicated to a patient-and-family-centered, multidisciplinary team approach to ensure that each patient and family receives the very best treatment and support developed especially for them.
A typical shift for our nurses includes being involved with patients across the care continuum, from diagnosis, through treatment, through cessation of therapy. Developing those long-term relationships with these families is definitely valued by our team
The Center is an active partner in the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) which consists of over 220 institutions across North America, Australia, New Zealand and Europe dedicated to the fight against childhood cancer. We, at Vanderbilt, have the opportunity to participate in clinical trials for front-line treatments to many types of childhood cancers as well as trials involving new and emerging treatments, supportive care, and survivorship.
